5 Easy Ways to Brighten Your Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and works tirelessly to protect against bacteria, the weather elements and many other things that go unnoticed – often leaving it looking a little lacklustre and dull. Here are 5 easy ways to make your skin look brighter.

Perhaps the easiest, yet most under-looked method of skin care is making sure to drink plenty of water. The body is much more equipped to remove toxins and refresh cells when it is properly hydrated; however, many of us do not drink nearly as much water as we should. For glowing, healthy skin it is recommended that we drink at least 2 litres of water a day. You can also hydrate your skin externally by using moisturisers which automatically refresh and brighten the face; it is best to use moisturisers suitable to your skin type and try to use as natural a product as you can. Natural moisturisers that you may already have in your home include:

  • Buttermilk
  • Avocado
  • Olive oil

Note: A common mistake people make during their skin care regimes is to over wash the face; washing the face too frequently strips it of its natural oils and so dries it out, you should wash your face once a day – twice a day at maximum – and treat it with one of the aforementioned moisturisers if you feel it is a little dry.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a plant extract that has been used for thousands of years for many different purposes – including for its benefits to skin. There are a number of skin types that people may have – oily, dry, acne prone or a combination of these. Aloe Vera is suitable for all types! It is known to moisturise, cleanse and heal the skin with its nourishing and anti-bacterial properties. Things you will need:

  • Small dish
  • 2 tbsp. Aloe Vera gel
  • 1 mango
  • 1 lime

Mix the pulp of a mango and a few drops of lime juice with 2 tablespoons of Aloe Vera gel until the ingredients form a smooth paste. Spread this mixture across the face and leave for 15 – 20 minutes; rinse with warm water when time has elapsed. Your skin will immediately look more radiant and healthy.

Exfoliation of the skin is the process in which dead skin cells and other tiny particles on the face are removed – brightening the skin and leaving it clean and refreshed. Exfoliation is also great for acne-prone skin as it helps to unclog the hair follicles and pores that are responsible for pimples. It’s easy to make your own exfoliating scrub at home, you will need:

  • 2 tsp. brown sugar
  • 1 large tomato
  • 1/2 tsp. honey

Crush up the tomato in a bowl and mix in the sugar and honey, gently massage the mixture into your face (you should feel the sugar granules exfoliating your skin). Leave this mixture on your face for a further 5 minutes and then rinse with warm water. Your skin will feel smoother and cleaner and will look much brighter.

Not only are bananas good for us when eaten, but also when mashed up and used as a skin treatment. Rich in potassium and vitamin E, the banana is particularly nourishing to skin and provides hydration as well as having antioxidant properties that leave the skin looking glowing. It’s also a good and natural skin brightener for african americans in particular. For further skin brightening, the banana can also be mixed with milk. Simple, yet effective.

Lemon juice

This is a very simple method and you will only require one thing: a single lemon! Lemons are high in vitamin C which help to regulate the skin’s production of melanin; melanin is what gives the skin it’s natural colouring. Simply take one lemon slice and rub it on the area of skin which you would like to brighten. Not only does it help to regulate melanin production, but the citric acid in it promotes the renewal of skin cells.

These are 5 easy ways to not only brighten your skin, but to nourish it and keep it healthy too! It is important to understand your skin type before using any treatments, but whatever your skin type is, you are sure to have one of these simple ingredients in your home that can be used to make it look that little bit brighter and healthier.
